Charming! This is an old (at least vintage) trinket basket woven by the Makah. It is composed of cedar bark and bear grass, is constructed using closed wrap twining, and is decorated with orange, green and brown bands. The basket measures 5 inches in length by 3 inches in height.
Makah Cedar Bark Baskets are created with a highly specialized skill that requires patience, focus, and a deep knowledge of tribal traditions.
This basket was purchased at auction in the 1980s-1990s and appears old. An appraiser has declared the basket to be Makah, but no authentication of age or origin is available.
The basket is in poor condition with a large tear. There has been an attempt to repair the basket in the past. The basket was purchased in this condition. Even with the tear, the basket is a beauty. The price reflects the condition of the basket.
This is a versatile piece which would look wonderful in the currently popular farmhouse style, a contemporary decor, or anywhere there is desire for warmth, smooth lines, texture, and an earthy element. It would be a nice piece for the collector looking to round out their collection.
