If you are a basket lover, you will appreciate the clean simplicity of this Tarahumara basket. This vintage basket has a near perfect cylindrical shape, measuring 7 inches in height by 12 in diameter. It is woven from agave. The weaving technique combined with the natural variations in plant color give this basket a herringbone design.

The basket was purchased new at Le Baron’s Primitive Indian Artifacts in the 1990s (tag attached). It has had one owner and was on display in a non-smoking home.

The Tarahumara people are native to the Copper Canyon region of Chihuahua Mexico. Their baskets are woven using a double weave technique, and as such are considered quite durable. Their basket weaving techniques have been passed down for over 300 years.

This basket would look wonderful in the currently popular farmhouse style, a contemporary decor, or anywhere there is desire for warmth, smooth lines, texture, herringbone details, or an earthy element.
