This is an amazingly sweet owl made using traditional Zuni methods. The Zuni tend to use white to gray clay, a white slip, and a mineral paint of dark brown or black. Frequently a dark red mineral paint was used as well. This Zuni owl has a white slip and red-brown eyes, horns, and feather details. The owl measures 10" in height. It has extended wings and tail, none of which are chipped or broken. Unfortunately, one horn is chipped and the other horn is broken, but preserved (see picture that shows the broken horn has been saved).

The Zuni potters had many styles, but geometric abstract bird motifs became popular. The Zuni made a variety of forms including owls, deer, human figures, and a variety of vessels. The age of this owl is not known, nor is it signed. It appears old. Wear is what would be expected of an older vintage piece of art.

The owl was purchased at auction in the 1980s-1990s (sticker still attached), and has had one owner since. The owl has been on display in a non-smoking home in an open, yet protective display case. The vessel would be perfect for the current popular farmhouse style, or anywhere there is a desire for texture, ethnic art, geometric symmetry, or a wish for natural earthy elements.
